Read a new article independently

Compare two accounts while retaining their shared facts and distinct emphasis.

Prerequisite: the earlier lessons in this course, especially time, references, and qualified claims. Use the previous link if these are unfamiliar.

You can answer in English. Keep the translation closed for your first attempt. Dictionary use is compatible with independent reading; a successful exercise is not a fluency certificate.

Read before the explanation

Read for the main meaning first. Then consider this question: Give the trial’s duration, scope, review requirement, test limitations, and renewal status. Does under a minute describe the whole process?

English reading, after your attempt

The fictional city of Valmont launched an automatic-translation trial on Monday in two municipal reception offices. For six weeks, staff will be able to use an assistant to prepare written replies to simple requests. Administrative decisions, medical files, and legal documents are excluded. Every response must be reviewed by a staff member before sending.

According to the council, the goal is to reduce time spent on initial responses. The supplier says its tool handles a routine request in under a minute. That duration, however, includes neither content checking nor any correction of the translation. The council has published no measure of the total time needed to process a file.

In a preliminary test, 80 sentences were translated into four languages. Twelve translations needed correction. The supplier presented the result and also selected the sentences. A local association believes this sample does not represent the variety of requests received. It asks for more complex situations to be included in the evaluation without using real personal data.

The announced six-week cost is 4,800 euros. It includes software access and two training sessions. Maintenance after the trial would be covered by a separate contract, whose price is not yet set. The council specifies that no renewal commitment has been signed. The usual service will remain available throughout.

An assessment will be published after the trial. It must distinguish response generation time from review time. Errors will be classified by their effect on meaning, not only by their number. A translation reversing a prohibition will not be treated as a mere accent error.

For now, no result establishes that the system improves overall service quality. The council presents the operation as an experiment. The council will then decide whether to continue, modify, or stop the project.

Begin with support closed

Read both texts before opening the translations or answers. Draft a short account in English. Record the main change, what remains conditional, who supports each contested claim, and what the evidence cannot establish. The two texts below are original fictional reporting about the same trial.

Read what each news sentence commits to

Independent news reading requires more than finding familiar nouns. In the fictional report La piscine rouvrira après les contrôles, la piscine means the swimming pool, rouvrira means will reopen, and les contrôles means the inspections. The sentence places reopening after inspections. It does not state that those inspections have already happened or that a particular date is fixed. A summary that announces immediate reopening would reverse the time relationship. Begin with the event verb, then attach the phrase that constrains when the event can occur.

Compare La ville prévoit de rouvrir la piscine with La ville a rouvert la piscine. Prévoit de means plans to, whereas a rouvert reports reopening as completed. In the first sentence, the planned event remains inside the planning statement. In the second, it is the reported event itself. Both contain the same place and institution, so a noun-based summary could miss the difference. A full account must preserve whether a report describes a plan, an action under way, a completed action, or a condition for action.

Plan, event, and purpose

French wordingReading consequence
La ville prévoit de rouvrir la piscine.Reopening is planned.
La ville a rouvert la piscine.Reopening is reported as completed.
La ville étudie une réouverture.Reopening is under consideration.
Les travaux visent une réouverture.Reopening is the works’ goal.
The same fictional facility appears in each sentence, but the verb construction changes the status of reopening. Shared nouns do not make these reports equivalent.

Purpose also differs from measured effect. In the fictional sentence Les horaires ont été modifiés pour réduire l’affluence, les horaires means opening times, ont été modifiés means were changed, and l’affluence means crowding or visitor numbers in this context. The change is reported; reduced crowding is its stated purpose. The passive construction leaves whoever changed the times unnamed. Neither an achieved benefit nor the actor can be recovered from grammar alone. Do not turn the policy’s purpose into a result or supply a responsible official without textual evidence.

A concession preserves two statements that might seem to conflict. Bien que les analyses soient rassurantes, le bassin reste fermé means that although the tests are reassuring, the pool remains closed. Les analyses means the tests, rassurantes means reassuring, and reste fermé means remains closed. Soient is a subjunctive form required by this concessive construction. It does not necessarily mean the writer doubts the reassuring results. The sentence presents a positive finding alongside continued closure. Reading only the positive adjective would erase the current access restriction.

Negation must attach to the correct claim. La ville ne prévoit pas de fermeture totale denies that the city plans a total closure. La ville prévoit une fermeture partielle affirmatively reports a partial closure plan, with partielle meaning partial. The first does not logically require the second. There may be no closure plan at all, or the plan may remain undecided. Before treating two reports as equivalent, ask whether one asserts something that the other merely leaves possible. A plausible policy story is not a substitute for the wording.

A reassuring result does not remove a restriction

Concession

Bien que les analyses soient rassurantes, le bassin reste fermé.

Bien que les analyses soient rassurantes,
Reassuring results granted as a concession
le bassin reste fermé.
Continued closure is the main statement
Explicit contrast

Les analyses sont rassurantes, mais le bassin reste fermé.

Les analyses sont rassurantes,
Reassuring results stated
mais le bassin reste fermé.
Closure contrasts with the expected implication
The concession and contrast keep both claims visible. The subjunctive follows the concessive construction and does not itself negate the positive description of the test results.

For a first account of an article, give the main event and its status before the secondary details. With the fictional pool report, you might distinguish planned reopening from present closure and tests from decisions. Then attach the sources and qualifications that constrain those statements. This is not a demand for a literal English translation of every sentence. It is a way to avoid promoting an intention, an attributed explanation, or an expected benefit into an established event. Unknown vocabulary matters most when it changes one of those relationships.

Compare accounts without counting agreement as proof

Two articles may repeat the same press release. Shared wording is not independent corroboration. One can emphasize possible benefits and another limits without factual contradiction. Inspect whether the claims use the same source, test population, baseline, and time period.

Compare sources at the level of individual claims

Two fictional reports about a coastal path can share an event but differ in emphasis. One writes La commune répare le sentier après les pluies, while another writes Des riverains contestent le calendrier des travaux. La commune means the municipality, le sentier means the path, les pluies means the rains, and des riverains means local residents. Contestent le calendrier means challenge the timetable. Repairs and objections can coexist. Different headlines do not establish contradiction unless the claims concern incompatible events, times, quantities, or conditions within the same scope.

Attribution belongs to particular statements, not automatically to every sentence in a paragraph. In Selon les riverains, le détour dépasse deux kilomètres. La commune publiera une carte, le détour means the detour and dépasse means exceeds. The distance is attributed to residents. The map’s future publication is a separate reported statement unless wider context also attributes it. Track where a source phrase applies, and check later reporting verbs. A paragraph can alternate an institution’s announcement, a resident’s complaint, and the reporter’s description without quoting each in full.

Count the right thing

French wordingReading consequence
Trois habitants signalent un glissement.Three people; possibly one event.
Le rapport relève trois glissements.Three events recorded in one report.
Trois journaux citent le même rapport.Three outlets; one underlying report.
These fictional statements contain the same numeral but count different units. Neither the number of witnesses nor the number of publications automatically counts independent observed events.

A source may also contain another source. The fictional sentence Le journal cite un rapport commandé par la commune means that the newspaper cites a report commissioned by the municipality. Cite means cites and commandé par means commissioned by. The newspaper is not necessarily the report’s author, and commissioning is not the same as performing the measurements. Identify each relationship separately. If a second article cites the first article’s description of that report, the chain is longer, but the underlying measurement has not multiplied merely because another outlet repeated it.

Compare the fictional claims Le rapport relève trois glissements de terrain and Trois habitants signalent un glissement de terrain. Relève means records, signalent means report, and un glissement de terrain means a landslide. The first counts events in a report. The second counts people reporting an event. Three witnesses might describe the same landslide. A summary that turns them into three independent landslides changes the unit being counted. Source counting, event counting, and corroboration therefore need separate treatment even when the same numeral appears nearby.

Not confirming a date differs from rejecting it. In the fictional report La commune n’a pas confirmé la date, la date means the date and n’a pas confirmé means has not confirmed. The date may be wrong, undecided, or simply unconfirmed publicly. La commune a démenti cette date is stronger, with a démenti meaning denied or refuted that date. Even then, read what exactly is denied. The institution might reject a particular date without denying the project. Keep the object of each reporting verb in view.

An attributed distance and a separate announcement

Distance claim

Selon les riverains, le détour dépasse deux kilomètres.

Selon les riverains,
Source of the following distance estimate
le détour dépasse deux kilomètres.
Attributed claim about detour length
Separate announcement

La commune publiera une carte.

La commune
Institution that will publish
publiera
Future publication, not completed publication
une carte.
Object to be published
The first sentence identifies residents as the source of a distance claim. The second statement concerns a future map and does not acquire that attribution automatically.

When comparing accounts, first align the claims that actually match. A report on current repairs and a report on an earlier funding decision may refer to the same path without describing the same event. Check dates, locations, source chains, and the things counted before judging disagreement. If both rely on the same municipal document, their agreement establishes shared reporting of that document, not an independent survey. Conversely, different emphasis can reveal an omitted qualification without proving that either text states a falsehood. Compare individual claims rather than overall tone.

Transfer to a publication

Choose a fresh 300–700-word article from a French publication, preferably on a subject you already know. Franceinfo is one possible starting point; availability and difficulty vary. Record its title, publication date, author if supplied, and a link or your own lawful copy. Apply the same claim map. The course cannot automatically grade an arbitrary article or verify its facts. Use the model answers here to learn the method, not as a substitute for reading the new text.

Attach numbers to populations, periods, and baselines

A denominator is the total against which a part is measured. In the fictional result Huit réponses sur quarante sont incomplètes, réponses means responses and incomplètes means incomplete. Eight out of forty is twenty percent. The denominator is forty responses, not forty people or forty offices unless the article says so. If one person submitted several responses, a response count cannot become a person count. Before using a percentage in an English account, identify what was counted and what total the reported part belongs to.

Rates need their comparison baseline. In the fictional sentence Le taux passe de 20 % à 25 %, le taux means the rate and passe de ... à ... means moves from one value to another. The increase is five percentage points. Relative to the starting rate of twenty percent, it is a twenty-five percent increase. The phrases measure different relationships. Calling the change five percent would be misleading if you mean the relative increase. No advanced mathematics is required, but the starting value cannot disappear when interpreting a relative change.

Points, relative change, and counts

French wordingReading consequence
De 20 % à 25 %.Increase of five percentage points.
Un taux de 20 %, augmenté de 25 %.Relative increase leads to 25 percent.
Huit réponses sur quarante sont incomplètes.Eight incomplete responses out of forty responses: 20 percent.
Jusqu’à quinze personnes.Upper bound, not actual attendance.
These fictional quantities describe distinct relationships. Keep the unit, starting value, and denominator attached to a number before comparing it with another report’s measure.

Counts and rates can also move differently. Suppose a fictional bulletin reports Le nombre de dossiers urgents baisse, mais leur part augmente. Dossiers urgents means urgent cases, baisse means falls, and leur part means their share. Fewer urgent cases can form a larger share of all cases if the total case count falls faster. There is no contradiction from the wording alone. You need both denominators and periods to assess the comparison. A smaller absolute count does not guarantee a smaller proportion.

Time comparisons can conceal unequal exposure. Dix incidents en janvier, six en février reports ten incidents in January and six in February. If the fictional facility opened twice as many days in January, the lower February count does not by itself show a lower incident rate per opening day. En locates the counts in months; it does not normalize them. Check whether the article compares raw totals, rates per day, rates per visitor, or another measure. An omitted denominator is an evidence limit, not a number you may safely invent.

Bounds differ from precise totals. Au moins quinze dossiers means at least fifteen files, environ quinze means approximately fifteen, and jusqu’à quinze means up to fifteen in the relevant construction. If a fictional report says Une salle peut accueillir jusqu’à quinze personnes, peut accueillir means can accommodate. It gives capacity, not actual attendance. The grammar of possibility and the upper bound both matter. A summary reporting fifteen people present would replace a capacity statement with an event count that was never supplied by the sentence.

What the stated time includes

French wordingReading consequence
Dix minutes de trajet.Travel time; waiting inclusion unstated.
Dix minutes d’attente.Waiting component only.
Dix minutes, attente comprise.Waiting explicitly included.
Dix minutes, hors attente.Waiting explicitly excluded.
The same fictional journey can have different measured components. A claim about one component cannot supply the total unless the other components and their relationship are known.

Headline compression can hide these relationships. The fictional headline Fréquentation : +10 % names attendance and a ten percent increase but omits the comparison period and baseline. The article may supply both. Until then, do not reconstruct a detailed claim about yearly attendance or every location. An expanded reading should remain cautious about missing variables. The headline points to a reported increase, while the body determines what the measure covers. Treat compressed wording as a prompt to locate evidence, not as a complete statistical statement that already answers every comparison question.

The first excluded task is content checking. The following ni adds another exclusion; neither belongs in the stated generation time.

Turn the claim map into a bounded independent account

The lab selects one relationship at a time, while an independent article requires combining them. Use the prompt to distinguish a requested exclusion from a source phrase or a reference expression. The full sentence remains visible when you select a segment and press Check selection. If the feedback identifies a different role, compare that role with the requested relationship. A correct response concerns this authored example. It does not automatically evaluate your article summary, establish all pronoun referents in arbitrary writing, or verify the report’s underlying evidence.

Consider a new fictional report Les analyses avaient été réalisées par un laboratoire privé avant la visite. Les analyses means the tests, avaient été réalisées means had been performed, un laboratoire privé means a private laboratory, and la visite means the visit. The compound passive places testing before a past reference point. Par identifies the laboratory as performer. The tests are the grammatical subject, not the actor. This distinction matters when an article later discusses who financed the work, because payer and performer need not be the same institution.

Separate the institutions’ relationships

French wordingReading consequence
Financées par la commune.Municipality supplies funding.
Réalisées par un laboratoire.Laboratory performs tests.
Présentées par une association.Association presents results.
Citées par un journal.Newspaper cites the tests.
The fictional tests can be funded, performed, and reported by different organizations. Identifying one relationship does not establish the others when the sentence leaves them unnamed.

Now compare Les analyses avaient été financées par la commune. Financées means funded. This sentence identifies funding but leaves the performer unnamed. It is not an interchangeable paraphrase of the previous sentence. Nor does the passive form imply that the actor is hidden in every case. An actor can be explicit after par, or omitted. When mapping a source chain, keep commissioning, funding, performing, and reporting distinct. The article may provide some of those relationships and leave the others unknown, even within a single compact paragraph.

A brief English summary can retain a conditional without reproducing French sentence order. For the fictional sentence Si les contrôles sont concluants, l’accès sera rétabli, concluants means satisfactory or conclusive in context and l’accès sera rétabli means access will be restored. The restoration depends on the inspection result. Reporting merely that access will be restored drops a condition. Reporting that it reportedly has been restored changes both time and evidential status. Decide what governs the event before choosing an English verb that sounds fluent but carries a stronger commitment.

Selective dictionary use should target consequential uncertainty. If hors in hors entretien is unknown, look it up because entretien means maintenance here and the phrase excludes it from a cost. An unfamiliar decorative adjective may not alter the event map. Read the dictionary’s construction and context, not only its first English equivalent. The same noun can have another sense elsewhere. Afterwards reread the French phrase with its host sentence. A useful lookup resolves a relationship; a list of detached meanings may leave the article’s cost or timing just as unclear.

Do not remove the condition

French wordingReading consequence
Si les contrôles sont concluants, l’accès sera rétabli.Future restoration depends on satisfactory tests.
L’accès sera rétabli lundi.Future restoration assigned to Monday.
L’accès a été rétabli.Restoration reported as completed.
L’accès aurait été rétabli.Restoration reported with distance in news context.
These fictional access statements differ in time and commitment. A future event subject to a condition must not become a completed event or an unconditional promise in a summary.

For external transfer, select an available article and record its publication date and any update time. Candidate publications vary in difficulty and access; none has been freshly reviewed for this addition. Compare another account only after identifying the first account’s claims and sources. Your final account should retain material exclusions, uncertain actors, and conditional outcomes where the wording requires them. The course’s closed answers illustrate reasoning on its original samples. They cannot grade a new article, certify its truth, or guarantee comprehension of every report on a familiar topic.

L’association demande un test plus représentatif

L’association de Valmont ne demande pas l’arrêt immédiat de l’assistant de traduction. Elle souhaite une évaluation plus large. Le premier test, présenté par le fournisseur, portait sur 80 phrases choisies par celui-ci. Douze traductions ont nécessité une correction.

L’association insiste sur le temps de vérification, absent de la durée de génération annoncée.
