English reading, after your attempt

The library in the Tilleuls neighbourhood will open on Sunday mornings for three months, starting on 8 September. The council announced the trial on Monday. Until now, the building was closed on Sundays. Hours on other days are unchanged. This is an experimental service, not a permanent change to the rules.

According to the council, the opening should make it easier for residents who work on Saturdays to visit. Two staff members will be present from nine to one. Visitors will be able to read on site and borrow books. Children’s workshops, however, will remain on Wednesdays. No additional Sunday workshop is planned.

The announced budget is 12,000 euros for the three months. A readers’ association believes this amount does not include all cleaning costs. The council says those costs are already included in another contract. Publicly accessible documents do not settle this question. The association therefore requests a detailed assessment at the end of the trial.

A consultation gathered 240 responses in the spring. Of those who responded, 180 supported opening. That is 75% of responses, but not necessarily 75% of neighbourhood residents. Participation was voluntary and there was no random selection. Several people requested later hours, until three in the afternoon.

The director specifies that hours may be adapted if attendance warrants it. For now, she gives no numerical target. Visits will be counted each Sunday, but the same reader may be counted several times if they return during the trial. The data will therefore not directly measure the number of different people.

At the end of three months, the council will decide whether to continue. No winter decision has yet been made. Residents can consult the opening hours at the library entrance or request a printed sheet at reception.

One contextual rendering, not a word-for-word substitution rule. Try another reading with this reveal closed.

Read in three passes

First read the headline and opening paragraph for the main event. Then inspect who says what, the dates, and any negatives or conditions. Finally reread without the translation and write a short account. Look up words that block consequential meaning; leave low-stakes detail for the second pass.

Recover the news event before evaluating the proposal

A complete article organizes information by importance rather than strict event order. Its opening usually identifies the newest development, while later paragraphs supply earlier decisions, competing accounts, and practical details. In a fictional report about shade in a school courtyard, the newest event might be publication of measurements, not installation of equipment. Read the main finite verb before deciding what happened. A headline about a trial does not tell you whether the article announces the trial, reports its results, or describes a dispute about how those results were collected.

Here is the opening of that invented report, La commune a publié mardi les premiers relevés de température de la cour de l'école des Pins. La commune means the municipality, a publié published, relevés de température temperature records, and la cour the courtyard. The central event is publication on Tuesday. The records concern the school courtyard. Nothing in this opening says installation happened Tuesday or that publication itself changed the temperature. Separate the reporting event from the situation the records measure before reading for whether the trial was useful.

Article order is not event order

French wordingReading consequence
a publié mardiPublication is the opening news event.
avaient été installées quatre semaines plus tôtInstallation precedes publication.
doit se poursuivre jusqu'à vendrediContinuation is scheduled, not a completed final outcome.
The invented courtyard report begins with the newest publication. The verb groups and time expressions place installation earlier and continuation later without naming an installer.

The next fictional sentence supplies the earlier context, Des voiles d'ombrage avaient été installées quatre semaines plus tôt. Des voiles d'ombrage means shade sails, fabric structures providing shade, and quatre semaines plus tôt four weeks earlier. Avaient été installées is an earlier-past passive, describing installation before the publication reference point. The sails are the subject receiving installation; the installers are unnamed. Read the full verb group together. A chronological summary can put installation first even though the article begins with publication. Changing presentation order need not change the reported event relationships.

The text then adds L'essai doit se poursuivre jusqu'à vendredi. L'essai means the trial, se poursuivre continue, and jusqu'à vendredi until Friday. Here doit can present an expected or scheduled continuation. It is not necessarily a command that the reader must carry out. The sentence does not establish continuation beyond Friday or say the final assessment already exists. News prose often combines completed announcements with ongoing projects and expected next steps. A single past-tense opening therefore does not make every subsequent proposition an accomplished past event.

On the first pass, these sentences give a coherent event sequence without requiring every technical detail. Shade sails were installed, initial records were later published, and the trial is expected to continue until Friday. The source of those initial records is the municipality. Whether the records show an improvement remains a separate question for the next paragraph. This division keeps the initial account informative while provisional. It avoids replacing the report's actual news event with an assumed conclusion such as a successful permanent redesign of the whole school.

The two subjects belong to different events. Keep the earlier-past passive together instead of assigning publication and installation to one time or one unnamed actor.

The original passage at the start of this lesson has a closed English reading and a separate vocabulary reveal. Use the vocabulary reveal for a word that blocks the event, rather than opening the full translation merely to find the article's subject. On a first pass, identify the opening verb, the affected place or service, and the time frame. That makes the later source and qualification pass specific. You will then know whether an unfamiliar detail could reverse the main event or merely refine a secondary description.

Build a claim map

For each important sentence, record its content, source, time, and qualification. La mairie affirme que belongs in a different category from a directly described opening. Two numbers may measure different things: people attending once and visits over a month are not interchangeable. A news-style course text is fiction, not reporting about a real town.

Link each result to its source and measurement

The next paragraph of the invented courtyard article reads Selon le service technique, les capteurs placés à l'ombre ont enregistré des températures plus basses le matin. Le service technique means the technical department, capteurs sensors, à l'ombre in the shade, and ont enregistré recorded. The temperature finding belongs to a source and a measurement arrangement. It concerns shaded sensors in the morning. Before calling the courtyard cooler in general, identify the comparison and period supplied later. A local measurement is narrower than a claim about every location throughout the day.

The report specifies L'écart avec les températures relevées au soleil atteint deux degrés. L'écart means the difference, atteint reaches, and les températures relevées au soleil the temperatures recorded in the sun. Two degrees is a temperature difference between sensor locations, not a two-percent change. Atteint may describe a maximum reached within the reported observations, so it need not mean every reading differs by exactly two degrees. A summary should retain the comparison's objects and avoid inventing an average, a minimum, or a permanent reduction from this wording alone.

Measurement, interpretation, and missing evidence

French wordingReading consequence
Selon le service technique, les températures sont plus basses à l'ombre.Department reports a sensor finding.
L'adjointe prévoit un meilleur confort.Official predicts a human benefit.
Les enseignants demandent des mesures pendant les récréations.Teachers identify a relevant evidence gap.
Ces résultats ne portent que sur six matinées.Observation period is restricted.
The fictional paragraph gives three different kinds of information. Keeping their sources and objects separate prevents a temperature comparison from becoming a measured comfort benefit.

An official may interpret the measurements more broadly. L'adjointe estime que le dispositif améliorera le confort des élèves contains l'adjointe, the deputy mayor, le dispositif, the arrangement, améliorera, will improve, and le confort des élèves, pupils' comfort. Estime marks her assessment. The measurement concerns temperatures at sensors; the prediction concerns people's comfort. Those are related but different propositions. An article may place them next to each other because one motivates the other, but adjacency does not establish that the predicted human benefit was directly measured.

A further fictional sentence states Les enseignants demandent toutefois des mesures pendant les heures de récréation. Les enseignants means teachers, demandent request, des mesures measurements here, and les heures de récréation break times. Toutefois qualifies the positive interpretation by identifying a relevant measurement gap. The teachers do not necessarily deny the recorded temperature difference. They ask whether the observations cover the periods when pupils use the courtyard. Distinguish disagreement about a number from disagreement about its relevance. Both can appear in news, but they need different summaries.

Track references across that paragraph. In Ces résultats ne portent que sur six matinées, ces résultats means these results, portent sur concern, and six matinées six mornings. The demonstrative points back to the recorded findings, not automatically to every future prediction. Ne...que restricts the observation period; it does not say no results exist. This gives a second boundary in addition to location. A claim can be limited both to shaded sensors and to a short period. Keeping both boundaries prevents a specific result from becoming an unrestricted conclusion.

Restrict the finding to what was measured

Reported measurement

Selon le service technique, les capteurs placés à l'ombre ont enregistré des températures plus basses le matin.

Selon le service technique,
Source of measurement claim

L'adjointe estime que le dispositif améliorera le confort des élèves.

L'adjointe estime
Source and assessment verb
que le dispositif
Que introduces the prediction; le dispositif is its subject
améliorera le confort des élèves.
Predicted benefit, not directly measured comfort
The location and time phrases constrain the sensor result. The separate assessment concerns pupils, so it cannot silently inherit the status of a direct measurement.

A claim map need not be a translation of every sentence. For the invented article, one entry can record the department's temperature finding with its comparison, location, and period. Another can record the deputy mayor's prediction about comfort. A third can record the teachers' request for observations during breaks. These entries distinguish evidence, interpretation, and requested evidence. That distinction is more useful than assigning each sentence an undifferentiated label such as fact or opinion, since a reported measurement can itself be attributed and an opinion can concern which measurement matters.

Check what your summary adds

A good summary can be shorter but must not turn a trial into a permanent service, a hope into a result, or one group’s estimate into a settled fact. Compare your answer with the evidence only after drafting it. If you understood the main event but missed a qualifier, revisit that sentence rather than rereading every word equally.

Revise a summary without reversing the article

A summary selects information, but its grammatical commitments still matter. For the fictional courtyard report, compare the English accounts "The school has permanently cooled its courtyard" and "The municipality published initial readings from a shade trial." The first adds permanence, a broad physical outcome, and an actor not established by the opening. The second preserves the main event while leaving detailed evaluation for another sentence. Shortening is not the problem. The problem is replacing an attributed, bounded event with a larger conclusion that the article has not yet established.

The invented report continues Aucune décision n'a encore été prise sur le maintien des voiles après l'été. Le maintien means retention or keeping in place, après l'été after summer, and aucune décision no decision. The passive gives no completed decision about retaining the sails beyond summer. Encore with the negative means not yet here. It leaves a future decision possible. A summary should not turn that into a rejection of the equipment. Pending, approved, and rejected are different statuses even when all three concern exactly the same proposal.

Which summary change alters the claim?

French wordingReading consequence
Aucune décision n'a encore été prise.Pending, not rejected.
La partie nord de la cour, et non les salles de classeOutdoor scope, not classroom findings.
L'adjointe estime que le confort sera amélioré.Prediction attributed to an official.
Les premiers relevés ont été publiés mardi.Publication event can be reported directly.
These fictional alternatives differ in commitment. A concise account can omit secondary detail, but changing pending to rejected or outdoor measurements to indoor results reverses important information.

Practical limits can change the meaning of an apparently broad finding. Les relevés concernent la partie nord de la cour, et non les salles de classe contains la partie nord, the northern part, et non, and not, and les salles de classe, classrooms. This excludes indoor classroom temperatures from the described measurements. The article's title might simply mention a school. The body narrows that wording to one outdoor area. A faithful summary can omit the compass direction if space is tight, but cannot claim the measurements establish cooler classrooms.

Time expressions also need a reference point. Vendredi prochain means next Friday relative to the speaker's or report's context, while vendredi dernier means last Friday. La veille means the previous day relative to an already established event. If an article is read much later, those phrases do not automatically refer to the reader's current week. Record the publication date before resolving relative dates. When the supplied text lacks enough calendar information, retain the relative sequence rather than inventing a day and month that merely fit your present date.

Not every omitted detail creates an error. A short account can leave out the exact number of sensors while preserving the location and period limits that determine the claim's scope. It can omit a minor quotation while retaining the disagreement about break-time observations. But omitting selon can change whose responsibility the finding is, and omitting pour l'instant, for now, can turn a current limit into an unlimited one. Judge omissions by whether they alter the event, source, scope, or commitment, rather than by whether the summary repeats every noun.

Pending is different from refusal

Still pending

Aucune décision n'a encore été prise sur le maintien des voiles après l'été.

Aucune décision
No decision of the relevant kind
n'a encore été prise
Decision not yet made
sur le maintien des voiles après l'été.
Question still awaiting decision
Explicit refusal

Le conseil a refusé le maintien des voiles après l'été.

Le conseil
Decision-making subject
a refusé
Completed refusal
le maintien des voiles après l'été.
Retention proposal refused
Both fictional sentences concern retention after summer. The first leaves the decision open; the second explicitly states refusal, so their summaries cannot be interchanged.

A useful revision checks each added English statement against a French clause. If your account says permanent, find wording supporting permanence. If it says proved, find evidence stronger than a speaker's expectation. If it says all pupils, identify the population actually measured. The courtyard example does not license those stronger claims. This is not a rule that summaries must sound doubtful about everything. The municipality's publication can be stated directly as the report's main event, while the reported measurements and predicted benefits retain their different sources and qualifications.

Read a linked paragraph with its limits intact

The lesson's segment cases isolate a population and a condition. These are article-level relationships as well as local grammar. For the population case, identify what whole the percentage concerns before checking. For the condition case, identify what must hold before the possible adjustment follows. Those choices do not evaluate the complete article for you. After the local check, return to the paragraph and ask which earlier claim this limit modifies. A condition near the end may qualify a service described optimistically in the opening, so placement alone does not make it secondary.

Finish the invented courtyard report with this worked paragraph, La commune publiera un bilan vendredi. Celui-ci réunira les relevés des capteurs et les observations des enseignants. Le conseil examinera ensuite les résultats, sans garantir le maintien du dispositif. Un bilan is an assessment, réunira will bring together, observations observations, examinera will examine, and sans garantir without guaranteeing. The paragraph names a future document, its planned contents, and a later examination. It does not present the assessment as already published or the retention of shade sails as assured.

A future document is not a completed decision

French wordingReading consequence
La commune publiera un bilan vendredi.Assessment publication remains future.
Celui-ci réunira les relevés et les observations.Assessment will combine two kinds of material.
Le conseil examinera ensuite les résultats.Council examination follows.
sans garantir le maintien du dispositifRetention is not guaranteed.
The final invented paragraph names several future steps. Keep the document, its contents, and the later examination separate from any decision about retaining the equipment.

Resolve celui-ci before interpreting the planned contents. This demonstrative pronoun refers to the masculine singular bilan, assessment, not the feminine commune, municipality. It makes the assessment the subject of réunira. The masculine conseil, council, appears only in the following sentence and is not the natural prior referent here. Grammatical agreement helps narrow the candidate, while sentence order and meaning establish the connection. The document will combine two kinds of material. That does not mean the two sources have already reached the same conclusion or measured the same thing.

The word ensuite, afterward, orders the council's examination after the assessment's publication in this account. It does not state the exact meeting date. Sans garantir le maintien withholds a guarantee of retention; it does not announce removal. Garantir is an infinitive following sans, not a new finite event that has already occurred. The paragraph therefore supports a planned sequence with an unresolved outcome. An English summary that says the council has approved permanent shade would reverse both the time relationship and the final qualification, even if it correctly identified every institution.

For this invented article, a compact account can now separate the main event, attributed findings, their limits, and the next decision stage. The main event is publication of initial temperature records. The department reports lower morning readings in shaded locations; teachers request readings relevant to breaks. A fuller assessment and council examination are still ahead. This worked account is an example of integrating different propositions, not an answer to the preserved article's exercises. The same reading decisions must be made afresh for that article's own sources, quantities, and qualifications.
